An apparatus comprises a first induction section comprising a first core and a first coil on the first core. A second induction section comprises a second core and a second coil on the second core. The first core comprises rail extensions, where at least two of the rail extensions extend from opposite ends of the first core. The second core comprises shoe portions located at respective ones of the rail extensions, where a gap is provided between each of the rail extensions and respective ones of the shoe portion. The second induction section is configured to move relative to the first induction section in a path along the extensions. The first induction section is configured to induce current in the second induction section, including when the second core moves relative to the first core along the extensions, to provide a contactless induction coupling between the first induction section and the second induction section.

17. An apparatus comprising:
a primary induction power portion comprising at least two first sections each comprising a first core and at least one first winding; and
a secondary induction power portion comprising at least one second section comprising a second core and at least one second winding;
where the at least two first sections having the first core and the at least one first winding are connected in a line to establish a path above the line,
where each of the first cores have an elongate length and a narrower width, where each of the first winding wraps around their respective first core in a lengthwise direction parallel to a centerline along the length of the respective first core; and
where the second core has an elongate length and a narrower width, where the at least one second winding wraps around the second core in a lengthwise direction parallel to a centerline along the length of the second core, where the length of the second core is longer than the length of the first core,
where the secondary induction power portion is movably mounted to the primary induction power portion with a gap therebetween, where the primary induction power portion is arranged on a transport rail system, where the transport rail system forms a stationary portion of a shuttle, where the secondary induction power portion is arranged on a movable portion of the shuttle configured to travel on the stationary portion of the shuttle, and where the apparatus further comprises a robot on the movable portion of the shuttle, and where the robot comprises at least one articulating arm,
where the second section having the second core and the at least one second winding is stationarily connected to the movable portion of the shuttle under the robot, and where the stationary portion of the shuttle is located under the movable portion of the shuttle and under the robot,
where power is configured to be transferred from the primary induction power portion to the secondary induction power portion as the secondary induction power portion moves along the path, where the power is sequentially transferred to the secondary induction power portion from only a first one of the first sections, then from both the first and a second ones of the first sections, and then from only the second one of the first sections as the secondary induction power portion moves along the path.
14. A method comprising:
providing a primary induction power portion, where the primary induction power portion comprises at least two first sections, where each first section comprises a first core and at least one first winding, where each of the first cores has an elongate length and a narrower width, where each of the first windings wraps around the respective first core in a lengthwise direction parallel to a centerline along the elongate length of the first core, where the first sections are aligned generally end to end along a line; and
providing a secondary induction power portion, where the secondary induction power portion comprises at least one second section comprising a second core and at least one second winding, where the second core has an elongate length and a narrower width, where the second winding wraps around the second core in a lengthwise direction parallel to a centerline along the length of the second core, where the length of the second core is longer than the elongate length of each of the first cores,
locating the secondary induction power portion opposite the primary induction power portion, where the secondary induction power portion is configured to move along a path parallel to the primary induction power portion with the second core(s) at least partially aligned with at least one of the first cores and the second winding(s) at least partially aligned with at least one of the first winding(s) for the primary induction power portion to induce current into the second winding(s), as the first winding(s) is energized, to provide an electromagnetic power coupling from the primary induction power portion to the secondary induction power portion,
where the secondary induction power portion is movably mounted to the primary induction power portion with a gap therebetween, where the primary induction power portion is arranged on a transport rail system, where the transport rail system forms a stationary portion of a shuttle, where the secondary induction power portion is arranged on a movable portion of the shuttle configured to travel on the stationary portion of the shuttle, and where the apparatus further comprises a robot on the movable portion of the shuttle, and where the robot comprises at least one articulating arm, where the primary induction power portion comprises the first sections aligned in the line to establish the path above the line.
1. An apparatus comprising:
a primary induction power portion comprising at least two first sections, where each of the first sections comprises a first core and at least one first winding, where each of the first cores has an elongate length and a narrower width, where each of the first windings wraps around the respective first core in a lengthwise direction parallel to a centerline along the elongate length of the respective first core, where the first sections are aligned generally end to end relative to one another along the centerlines in the lengthwise direction; and
a secondary induction power portion comprising at least one second section, where each of the at least one second section comprises a second core and at least one second winding, where the second core has an elongate length and a narrower width, where the second winding wraps around the second core in a lengthwise direction parallel to a centerline along the length of the second core, where the secondary induction power portion is located opposite the primary induction power portion, where the secondary induction power portion is configured to move along a path parallel to the primary induction power portion with the second core(s) being at least partially aligned with at least one of the first core(s) and the second winding(s) being at least partially aligned with at least one of the first winding(s) for the primary induction power portion to induce current into the second winding(s), as the first winding(s) is energized, to provide an electromagnetic power coupling from the primary induction power portion to the secondary induction power portion,
where the length of the second core is longer than the length of each of the first cores, where the secondary induction power portion is movably located relative to the primary induction power portion with a gap therebetween, where the primary induction power portion is arranged on a transport rail system, where the transport rail system forms a stationary portion of a shuttle, where the stationary portion of the shuttle is on a substrate processing chamber, where the secondary induction power portion is arranged on a movable portion of the shuttle configured to travel on the stationary portion of the shuttle, and where the apparatus further comprises a robot on the movable portion of the shuttle, and where the robot comprises at least one articulating arm and at least one end effector on the at least one articulating arm, where the at least one end effector is configured to support at least one substrate thereon and configured to move the substrate in a substrate processing chamber, and where the stationary portion of the shuttle is located under the movable portion of the shuttle, at least partially below the primary induction power portion and below the robot.
7. A method comprising:
providing a primary induction power portion, where the primary induction power portion comprises first sections, where each of the first sections comprise a first core and at least one first winding, where each of the first cores has an elongate length and a narrower width, where the first winding wraps around the respective first core in a lengthwise direction parallel to a centerline along the elongate length of the respective first core, where the centerlines of the first cores are aligned with the first sections generally end to end in a line; and
providing a secondary induction power portion, where the secondary induction power portion comprises at least one second section, where each of the at least one second section comprises a second core and at least one second winding, where the second core has an elongate length and a narrower width, where the second winding wraps around the second core in a lengthwise direction parallel to a centerline along the length of the second core,
locating the secondary induction power portion opposite the primary induction power portion, where as the secondary induction power portion is configured to move along a path parallel to the primary induction power portion with the second core(s) at least partially aligned with at least one of the first cores and the second winding(s) at least partially aligned with at least one of the first winding(s) for the primary induction power portion to induce current into the second winding(s), as the first winding(s) is energized, to provide an electromagnetic power coupling from the primary induction power portion to the secondary induction power portion,
where the length of the second core is longer than the length of each of the first cores, where the secondary induction power portion is movably located relative to the primary induction power portion with a gap therebetween, where the primary induction power portion is arranged on a transport rail system, where the transport rail system forms a stationary portion of a shuttle, where the secondary induction power portion is arranged on a movable portion of the shuttle configured to travel on the stationary portion of the shuttle, where the stationary portion of the shuttle is on a substrate processing chamber, and where the apparatus further comprises a robot on the movable portion of the shuttle, and where the robot comprises at least one articulating arm and at least one end effector on the at least one articulating arm, where the at least one end effector is configured to support at least one substrate thereon and configured to move the substrate in the substrate processing chamber, and where the at least one second section having the second core and the at least one second winding is stationarily connected to the movable portion of the shuttle under the robot, and where the stationary portion of the shuttle is located under the movable portion of the shuttle, at least partially below the primary induction power portion and below the robot.
13. A method comprising:
energizing windings in at least two first sections forming a primary induction power portion, where the at least two first sections are connected in a line, where each of the at least two first sections comprises a first core and at least one first winding, where each of the first cores have an elongate length and a narrower width, where each of the first winding wraps around their respective first core in a lengthwise direction parallel to a centerline along the length of the respective first core; and
inducing current into at least one second winding in a secondary induction power portion from the primary induction power portion, where the secondary induction power portion comprises a second core and the at least one second winding, where the second core has an elongate length and a narrower width, where the length of the second core is longer than the length of the first core, where the at least one second winding wraps around the second core in a lengthwise direction parallel to a centerline along the length of the second core, where power is transferred from the primary induction power portion to the secondary induction power portion as the secondary induction power portion moves along a path established with the line of the connected at least two first sections, where the power is sequentially transferred to the secondary induction power portion from only a first one of the first section, then from both the first one of the first sections and a second one of the first sections, and then from only the second one of the first sections as the secondary induction power portion moves along the path,
transferring electrical power from the secondary induction power portion to a robot having at least one articulating arm, where the robot is mounted to a movable portion of a shuttle having the secondary induction power portion located thereon, and where the movable portion of a shuttle is moveably mounted to a stationary portion of the shuttle having the primary induction power portion connected thereto,
where the secondary induction power portion moves along a path parallel to the primary induction power portion with the second core(s) at least partially aligned with at least one of the first core(s) and the second winding(s) at least partially aligned with at least one of the first winding(s) for the primary induction power portion to induce current into the second winding(s), as the first winding(s) is energized, to provide an electromagnetic power coupling from the primary induction power portion to the secondary induction power portion,
where the secondary induction power portion is movably located relative to the primary induction power portion with a gap therebetween, where the primary induction power portion is arranged on a transport rail system, where the transport rail system forms the stationary portion of a shuttle, where the secondary induction power portion is arranged on the movable portion of the shuttle traveling on the stationary portion of the shuttle, where the secondary induction power portion is stationarily connected to the movable portion of the shuttle under the robot, and where the stationary portion of the shuttle is located under the movable portion of the shuttle and at least partially below the secondary induction power portion, and where the movable portion of the shuttle is located below the robot with the robot moving above the primary induction power portion based upon current from the secondary induction power portion.

The exemplary and non-limiting embodiments relate generally to power couplings and, more particularly, to moveable electric power couplings.
Industrial equipment often has moving automation or payloads that require electrical power to operate. Typically a service loop will be provided that provides power from a stationary component to the moving component where the service loop may have multiple conductors in an e-chain or otherwise. The flexing of the wires may become a reliability concern and the relative movement of the wires and/or e-chain may generate unwanted particles or contamination.
The following summary is merely intended to be exemplary. The summary is not intended to limit the scope of the claims.
In accordance with one aspect, an apparatus comprises a first induction section comprising a first core and a first coil on the first core. A second induction section comprises a second core and a second coil on the second core. The first core comprises rail extensions, where at least two of the rail extensions extend from opposite ends of the first core. The second core comprises shoe portions located at respective ones of the rail extensions, where a gap is provided between each of the rail extensions and respective ones of the shoe portion. The second induction section is configured to move relative to the first induction section in a path along the extensions. The first induction section is configured to induce current in the second induction section, including when the second core moves relative to the first core along the extensions, to provide a contactless induction coupling between the first induction section and the second induction section.
In accordance with another exemplary aspect, a method may comprise providing a first induction section comprising a first core and a first coil on the first core, where the first core comprises rail extensions, where at least two of the rail extensions extend from opposite ends of the first core. The method may further comprise providing a second induction section comprising a second core and a second coil on the second core, where the second core comprises shoe portions. The method may further comprise locating the second induction section relative to the first induction section, where the shoe portions are located at respective ones of the rail extensions, where a gap is provided between each of the rail extensions and respective ones of the shoe portions, and such that the second induction section is configured to move relative to the first induction section in a path along the extensions. The first induction section is configured to induce current in the second induction section, including when the second core moves relative to the first core along the extensions, to provide a contactless induction coupling between the first induction section and the second induction section.
In accordance with another exemplary aspect, a method may comprise providing a contactless induction coupling comprising a first induction section and a second induction section, where the first induction section comprises a first core and a first coil on the first core, where the first core comprises rail extensions, where at least two of the rail extensions extend from opposite ends of the first core, and where the second induction section comprises a second core and a second coil on the second core, where the second core comprises shoe portions, the second induction section being located relative to the first induction section such that the shoe portions are located at respective ones of the rail extensions with a gap provided between each of the rail extensions and respective ones of the shoe portions, and such that the second induction section is configured to move relative to the first induction section in a path along the extension. While the second induction section moves along the extensions of the first induction section, producing alternating magnetic flux at the first induction section and inducing current in the second induction section from the alternating magnetic flux.

A separation barrier may be utilized between the primary module and the secondary module, for example, if the two modules are located in different environments. For instance, if the primary module is in an atmospheric environment and the secondary module resides in a vacuum environment, the separation barrier may separate the atmospheric environment from the vacuum environment. The separation barrier may be conductive or non-conductive and made of a suitable material to allow the alternating flux to pass between the primary and secondary as described in any of the disclosed embodiment. In accordance with one exemplary aspect, an apparatus is provided comprising a first induction section comprising a first core and a first coil on the first core. A second induction section comprises a second core and a second coil on the second core. The first core comprises rail extensions, where at least two of the rail extensions extend from opposite ends of the first core and where the second core comprises shoe portions located at respective ones of the rail extensions, where a gap is provided between each of the rail extensions and respective ones of the shoe portions. The second induction section is configured to move relative to the first induction section in a path along the extensions, where the first induction section is configured to induce current in the second induction section, including when the second core moves relative to the first core along the extensions, to provide a contactless induction coupling between the first induction section and the second induction section.
In the apparatus, the extensions may comprise rails which are substantially parallel to one another. In the apparatus, the extensions may comprise substantially straight rails. In the apparatus, the extensions may comprise curved rails. In the apparatus, the extensions may comprise connecting portions which connect the curved rails to a central portion having the first coil thereon. In the apparatus, the curved rails may each form a circle. In the apparatus, the extensions may comprise three or more of the extensions. In the apparatus, at least two second induction sections may be movably located on the first induction section. In the apparatus, the first induction section comprises more than one first coil, where each of the first cores are located on separate middle sections of the first core. In the apparatus, the first induction section comprises more than one first induction section located in series relative to one another. In the apparatus, the second induction section is connected to a robot having a movable arm, where movement of the second induction section relative to the first induction section on the extensions is configured to move the robot along the path. In the apparatus, the first and second induction sections may be connected to different components of a robot which are movable relative to each other, where at least one of the components is a link of a robot arm. In the apparatus, the first core and/or the second core has a central section with a substantial C shape. A controller, such as comprising at least one processor, at least one memory and computer software having code, may be used to control energizing of the coils and, thus, control movement of the rails/extensions.
It should be understood that the foregoing description is only illustrative. Various alternatives and modifications can be devised by those skilled in the art. For example, features recited in the various dependent claims could be combined with each other in any suitable combination(s). In addition, features from different embodiments described above could be selectively combined into a new embodiment.
