The ornamental design for a surface configuration of a compass, as shown and described.

FIG. 1 is a front view of a surface configuration of a compass according to my novel design, the shading showing color change which occurs on the compass to represent the deviation in direction from north; and,

FIG. 2 is an alternative front view of the surface configuration of a compass according to my novel design, similarly showing color change with shading.
